Over the past couple of years, fibre optic internet has become a popular way to connect to the World Wide Web, offering speed and affordability.
Smaller towns such as Krugersdorp have been left longing for the latest technologies and advanced internet infrastructure like the big cities have. Open access fibre-to-the-home (FTTH) network operator, Evotel, saw the need and jumped at the chance to build a fibre network in Krugersdorp to give residents the internet connection speeds they deserved.
According to Bradley Bekker, Head of Business Development at Evotel, “Evotel stands for ‘fibre for everyone’ and it is our mission to provide everyone in more remote areas of the country with a world-class fibre Internet network and allow them fast connection speeds.”
The Krugersdorp fibre network passes 12,606 homes, giving them access to fast and reliable fibre Internet connection. Piet Nel, a Rant-en-Dal resident, was the first to be connected and activated on the Evotel aerial fibre network in Krugersdorp. He remarked that he relied on his computers being up and connected 24 hours a day and since being on Evotel’s fibre network, he had nothing but constant, fast connection speeds. Evotel has the lion's share of Krugersdorp covered, and those residents on the Evotel fibre network don’t have to worry about any disruptions, says Bekker.
Evotel also started its Schools Programme in 2019, whereby the company provides any school that falls under its network coverage area with free Internet access through its fibre infrastructure. Five Krugersdorp schools were some of the first to benefit from this initiative. Through the Evotel network, learners now have the ability to do quick research for school projects, participate in online schooling initiatives and utilize all the prospects the Internet can offer them during their time at school. According to Bekker, “We care about the future of South Africa and its youth, which is why we decided to sponsor the fibre infrastructure for schools and ensure the success of our youth education.”
With the Krugersdorp build, the company focused on investing in the community and employed local contractors to assist with the construction of the infrastructure. Impisi Projects was one of the local companies employed to assist in the build. Impisi was initially employed as a subcontractor, but due to the exceptional work and quality provided, the company showed its worth and has now been employed by Evotel as a primary contractor to finalize the overall Krugersdorp build. Despite initial teething problems, Evotel considers the Krugersdorp build as one of its most successful network roll-outs.
